It

My search for the perfect baby blessing dress was leaving me feeling pretty hopeless. I wanted something white-based, but I didn't want a super-frilly dress. The only white dresses I could find were Christening dresses, which look like miniature wedding dresses. Okay, they're fancier than my wedding dress was. I had a simple wedding dress because my style is very simple. All I wanted was a simple white baby dress, is that too much to ask?

Apparently, yes.

Then I turned to another source and found exactly what I was looking for. I am the proud new owner of a 1940's-1950's hand-made white dress.
It's so simple and I love it a lot. And it was about 1/3 of the price of those huge dresses at the store.

I found it on e-bay.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Have you been to Michael's lately? If not, you need to go in the next week or two before it's all gone. Fall is here, but Christmas décor is encroaching, so fall is shorter than ever. It's quite a shame, because I LOVE fall decorations and fall colors and fall holidays. If I had any money, I would decorate my whole house for fall.

Speaking of fall holidays, my favorite holiday of the year is sooner than you think. Have you been thinking of your costumes? We have. We have our idea all put together. We just haven't done any physical work on them yet. This brings me to my question: When should the 3rd Annual Halloween Party be? (Yes, it'll be in Mesa). Here are your 2 options:

1. Saturday, October 28th
2. Tuesday, October 31st

Should we keep with the tradition of having a weekend party, or should we just go for the Tuesday party since no one really trick or treats anymore (it's all about the Trunk or Treat)? Are wards having their parties on the weekend or on Tuesday? Anyone?

All opinions from those planning on attending will be taken into consideration. Everyone is invited.

Some Perspective

Jake spent the afternoon yesterday taking apart our tree - limb by limb. These pictures give a little better perspective of just how big of a project this was.

This was taken about 1/2 way through the limb-cutting portion of the project. Notice how the tree is more than twice Jake's height.

Some of the branches were a little hard to get to, and took some creative climbing.

After all of the smaller limbs were cut off, the bigger branches had to be sawed off with a tree saw and/or chainsaw.

During the storm, I posted pictures of the tree on craigslist, and at 7:00 yesterday evening, someone came by with a trailer and hauled off all of the big limbs. They're planning on coming back today for the main trunk and roots. Now all we have is a large pile of the smaller branches. It's a much more managable load to take to the dump.

Yesterday Afternoon

Yesterday

5:15pm

5:30pm

5:45pm

The lovely green tree you see in the first picture is now lying down in our front yard. About 8 power poles went down on top of cars at the nearest intersection to our house, along with most of the other mesquite trees on our major streets.

The Nursery is Near Completion

I have really tried to use my homemaking time this week before I change jobs from "Homemaker to "Stay-at-Home-Mom". Obviously I have a lot more time on my hands now than I will in 5 weeks (4 weeks if I follow my cousin Macey's lead, 3 weeks if I follow Jake's friend's wife Shar, and 2 weeks if I follow Stephanie's sister Leslie). I'm still thinking it'll be 5 weeks away though.

The nursery is what has occupied most of my time since I moved back here. Here are the things I have completed so far:
I reupholstered my glider & ottoman.

I made an interior bag and border for the laundry basket.

I made a crib skirt & bumper for the crib, using 2 of the same fabrics from the quilt that I made. I also finished the quilt border.

I have a couple more sewing projects in my head, but nothing as time consuming as these were. As for the nursery, it is just missing its changing table, a few things for the walls, and a window valance. We're almost ready for our baby!

Motherly Advice

Jake and I have been looking at strollers for months now. We settled on this one:But now we're having second thoughts. We recently realized that you can get a "lightweight" stroller that fits a carseat, and those seem very appealing to me.The lightweights still have a basket underneath (smaller though), a cupholder for mom, & the seat reclines. One of the ones we looked at only had a handle for baby, no cup/snack tray. Also it looks like the wheels are smaller. A lot of the lightweights fold up like an umbrella stroller and weigh about 10-12 lbs. They cost about the same.

So here's where I need that motherly advice from all you moms out there. Will I miss the big stroller if I go with the lightweight? Or will I be glad I have it?

Another Project Completed

Welcome to Designer's Challenge meets Design on a Dime.

Steve & Susan live in a 2-story condo with their daughter Cathy and several cats. They moved in 4 years ago, but have not had time to renovate their guest room. Designers Jake and Abbie, of L&L Design presented a plan and a budget to update the room. Starting with white walls and 2 twin beds, Jake and Abbie had to work from scratch, so they spent some time with Steve & Susan to see what their interests were.

Steve & Susan enjoy scuba diving, and spend the majority, if not all, of their vacations at the beach. Jake and Abbie thought this would be a great theme for their guest room, so they presented a room with an island getaway feel.

Color Pallet: Green & Orange, with Almond trim & accents.

Lucky for Steve & Susan, Jake and Abbie live on a very, um, modest income, so a budget of $200 seemed like more than enough to completely furnish and remodel an entire room. (note: as the renovation began, Susan decided to upgrade to a queen-sized bed, so an additional $50 was added to the budget for a mattress, box spring, & frame)

Let's see the finished product.

View from the door.

Some of the furniture and accessories, including the nightstand, the turtle stained glass, and the palm tree photo album, were collected from various other rooms in the house. Here, they finally have a place where they fit in with the surrounding decor.

The headboard is made out of a straw beachmat with an orange striped border.

The previous closet doors, with their almond color and wooden slats gave the perfect cabana feel that Jake and Abbie were going for. Bench seating at the end of the bed were purchased new.

Jake and Abbie came in about $3 under budget, with a total of $246.53. Approximate costs:

Furniture: $80

Paint & Supplies: $65

Bedding: $60

Lighting & Accessories: $35

A Late Birthday Present

Cathy got me an eyebrow wax for my birthday, and she and I finally got to go on Saturday. Here's how my conversation with the little pregnant Vietnamese girl that did my brows went:

Girl: Oh, you're pregnant too?
Me: Yeah, when are you due?
Girl: September 20th. What about you?
Me: September 26th. Very close to you.
Girl: You're a lot bigger than me.
Me: Oh, thanks.

Here's the thing. Unless I have some sort of rose-colored glasses and think I'm smaller than I am, I'm pretty sure we were the exact same size. I even thought beforehand, as she was doing Cathy's brows, "I bet we're due at the exact same time".

National News

Did you hear about the serial shooter in Mesa? He, well they, were arrested this morning in THE APARTMENT COMPLEX I LIVED IN A YEAR AGO. That's right. And I hear it was about 4 units away from mine.

Last Week's Project

Due to a doctor's appointment on Monday and my boss being out of town Tuesday through Friday, I did not work at all last week.

On Monday, I spent the day driving to Tucson, taking a glucose test, and visiting my doctor. She said that my baby has a nice strong heartbeat - in the 150's, and she's measuring at exactly 31 weeks (which is right where I was supposed to be last week).

Since I didn't have to work Tuesday through Friday either, I spent the time working on one of my long-anticipated projects: my quilt. Here is what I accomplished:

This is just the front. It hasn't been tied or anything. It measures about 3½' x 4½'. My next project includes using the striped fabric to make crib bedding (hint, hint Robin). It's not perfect, but I think it turned out pretty good considering I got the idea from watching a quilting show one morning, and then just figured it out from there.

Oh, also, before this project, I was able to reupholster my glider cushions and ottoman. This was only possible thanks to the generous support and help of Stephanie. The cushions were moved back to Tucson on Monday though, so I don't have pictures yet. I'll take full nursery shots once we move back.

My Abusive Relationship

I never understood why women stayed in abusive relationships until I married a man that elbows me in the face in his sleep nightly. I still love him despite the bruises. "Love Bruises", he calls them.

The Home Stretch

Well, the number of weeks left until my due date has officially entered the single digits. I have 9 weeks (and 5 days) left until Baby Girl is scheduled to arrive. By the time we move back into our house in Tucson, it'll be 6 weeks, 3 days. It's so crazy to think that I was counting the weeks when I was less than 6 weeks along, and now the (time)tables have turned.

My pre-baby project list is quite extensive, but one of my top résumé items is that "I thoroughly enjoy taking on and completing large tasks". I'm a project person. I love everything I'm working on, and can't wait to see further progress in each of them. (of course, pictures of projects and final products will be posted as they are taken on).

When I think of having a baby, I always just try to imagine what life will be like with a baby in the house, I never think about what the delivery will be like. It's not that I'm avoiding thinking of the delivery. To me, it's like getting married. Some girls focus solely on getting to wear a big fancy dress and having a party dedicated to them. Others focus on what marriage will be like, and whether or not they are prepared for an eternal committment. I loved planning my wedding (again - a project) but I wasn't focused on that day alone. The same thing applies here.

These are just some thoughts I had today.

A Love-Hate Relationship

I can't think of anything to write about, so I thought I'd make a list of things I love and hate as of today. I know that "love" and "hate" are strong words, but I am using them here even though many things on this list may be temporary. Like/Dislike may be better, but they don’t flow nicely in list format.

I LOVE:
  • my zipperless/buttonless wardrobe
  • my belly
  • swimming
  • my short hair
  • my husband (not temporary)
  • craigslist
  • shrimp tacos
  • baby kicks
  • HGTV
  • planning a bunch of really cool projects to work on and actually working on some of them

I HATE:

  • looking at the scale, knowing I still have 2 more months of weight gain to go
  • listening to/watching people talk with their mouth full
  • daily afternoon backaches
  • insurance
  • random nausea
  • charlie horses

The Cat was Almost Let Out of the Bag

Jake came home from work yesterday with a bag from Last Chance. He had purchased some decor for our baby's nursery. When he pulled it out of the bag, he showed it to me and said "I got these for _________'s room", right in front of my mom. I stared at him to see if he realized what he had done, and he had, so he casually re-said his sentence, "I got these for Baby's room".

My mom's head was in the fridge during the whole conversation, and she didn't flinch when Jake said it, so we weren't sure if she heard and was just playing cool, or if she missed it completely due to the sounds of the fridge motor.

We decided that if she did hear, we'd just let the name go out into the open, but if not, our little game was still on. I approached her and asked if she heard, and she was completely shocked and disappointed that she hadn't. She was 3 feet away from it, but didn't catch it. Silly fridge.

Sorry everyone! Guess you'll just have to wait another 11 weeks.

A San Francisco Treat

Thanks to the wedding of a brother-in-law, Jake and I got to spend the 4th of July weekend in San Francisco. We enjoyed great food and great sites, and we really enjoyed our long weekend off of work.

Note to self for future trips to San Francisco: Do not drive through the Italian District just as Italy wins its soccer game again. It will be really loud and crowded. It's a good thing Jake looks Italian, or we may have had some problems.

Here are some of the highlights from the rest of the trip.

We drove up a bridge leading into heaven.

We visited the Golden Gate Bridge.
Jake played frisbee at a park with his brother and dad.
We drove down the coast and visited the beaches.
We saw a lot of beautiful flowers.
We found some sunbathing turtles.

And we found this little guy checking us out
as we walked through Golden Gate Park.
We had a very fun and relaxing time. It was great to spend time in a big city. Our next vacation will include a baby and all the gear babies like to tow around with them, so we were very grateful for this trip!

Quite A Change

Okay, here is my big post I warned about last week.

Saturday Morning:

Saturday Afternoon:

Saturday Evening:

Hmmm, it appears from the last picture that my haircut is lopsided, but it's not. I must have been just turning my head or something.

My ponytail will soon be shipped off to Locks of Love. I've always wanted to do this for some reason, so I figured that my pregnancy hormones would give me a good chance to get the 10" of ponytail I needed to donate. I also convinced a long-haired cousin of mine to do the same thing, so stay tuned to her blog for pictorial updates as well.

Oh, and here's a picture from the same day that gives a good tummy size update. 6 months 9 days today. (and as of Tuesday, I am officially in my 3rd trimester).

Maternity Clothes

WARNING: Venting blog. Probably worth skipping today.

Why do clothing designers think that all pregnant women are middle-aged or retired? Why do Motherhood jeans come with huge hips and tapered bottoms? Do they not know that the national average age of a woman when she gives birth to her first child is 25? Do 25-year-old women like flabby tapered jeans? Then why would they like them when they're pregnant?

Why do I find myself wishing that the Junior section of a store had maternity wear? It's not that I would wish pregnancy or motherhood on any teen-aged girl, it's that I wish the clothing I can find in their section came with an elastic waistband.

My only friend at this point seems to be Old Navy. However, their selection was quite slim this morning, and I was left sifting through all their piles of clothes for my size, only to walk away empty handed. This was superbly frustrating. Mind you, I was trying on clothing that was still marked at FULL PRICE. For those of you who know me well, you will know that I probably do not currently own a piece of clothing that I paid full price for. It's just not in my blood to do something like that. I have a really hard time spending money on myself, but I am getting desperate. Nothing fits the bottom half of my body anymore.

I find myself longing for the weekend not because of a break from work, but because I can wear my lounge wear all day, and I don't have to worry about finding something to fit into to go to work. I feel pretty pathetic right now cause I just realized that my inlaws have probably only seen me wear one pair of pants since we moved here, since I wear them every Saturday.

If anyone needs me this afternoon, I'll be the one screaming in frustration in the Maternity section of various stores around Mesa.

Baby Girl Names

After hours and hours of harassment, Jake and I have decided to reveal our top baby name choices for everyone. We feel it will just be easier to let them be known than to be bugged about it all the time. Please feel free to vote for your favorites and let us know how you feel about them. As you can see, each of the names has a very special meaning to each of us.

(in no particular order)

1. La-Fon-Duh (from a movie we both like)
2. Ewis (similar to a family name)
3. Abjacób (our names combined)
4. Jenny (Jake's 4th grade crush)
5. Ethel (my cat)
6. Randy (the brother I never had, yet the subject of an essay Mike wrote)
7. Julie (my favorite character from Saturday's Warrior growing up)
8. Toro (our high school mascot)
9. Shane (named after my favorite radio commercials)
10. Alexanderwood (street)
11. Bardette (similar to a family name)
12. Lisianthus (my favorite flower)
13. Eagle (to remind us that Jake is not an Eagle Scout)
14. Jakigail (another name combination option)
15. P.C. (showing our support for non-apple computers [plus, Apple is already taken])

I hope this will ease the pestering and help everyone to feel as informed as they should be. We hope you can help narrow down our name selection. Thanks!

My Name Twin

Say hello to my name twin. She is from London and we basically live identical lives. She is an assistant at a consulting firm. I am an assistant at a law firm. She spent 6 months in the "dispute resolution department", which is exactly like the grievance and appeals department at my last job in Phoenix (where I spent 6 months). She also used the word "whilst" in her profile, which I love. It's probably more frequently used in England, but I still enjoyed reading it. (Thanks Jill for the idea).

4 Jobs in 4 Weeks

My life is completely different than what it was one month ago (well, completely different during regular business hours, pretty much the same the rest of the day). I started out a month ago at PPEP in Tucson, then moved to Mesa, where I quickly acquired a temp position with a well-known insurance company. However, the job described to me was far from the actual position, so I had to make a decision: either explode on the inside or quit. So I now have on my record a 2 1/2 week job. Nice. I worked there until last Wednesday. Last Thursday I started working for my mom at her law firm. I'm not sure what my title is, but it something like, "Awesome Attorney Assitant Extrodinaire-temp".

(Have you been keeping track? That's 3 jobs)

Then, on Saturday, I started my Saturday job - answering the phones for my dad's chem-dry business. It's commission only though, so it really varies on the pay I'll be making from it.

Stay tuned for my BIG post - sometime between Saturday and Monday. It's going to be HUGE news. And awesome. (no, Stephanie, I'm not going to reveal baby girl's name)

Settling In

Jake and I arrived in Mesa about a week ago, and have almost completely settled in. The original plan was to stay with his parents, but we decided that they have enough on their plate right now with a wedding in the works and some other guests planned for next month. So we moved into my parents' basement. We did some major cleaning and renovations to our area, and now it's beginning to feel like home. Temporary home, that is.

One big change for me was doing laundry with sleepy kitties nearby. Ethel has always loved a damp towel, and my hang-to-dry pile of clothes were an inviting place for a nap for her. Fred just sleeps all the time.

Changes on the Horizon

Today is my last day of work. I don't mind because I'm not friends with anyone here. I'm not going to miss anyone except for maybe an occasional 'I miss my co-workers' type thing. No one except my boss officially knew I was pregnant until yesterday, when someone asked cause they said I was starting to show (it's a good thing I am pregnant, or that would have been pretty embarrassing). I say no one "officially" knew because I could hear whispers and I could see tummy glances for a couple of weeks now, from the people too scared to ask me anything.

Anyway, Jake's last final ends at noon today, and then we can start packing. That's right, we haven't started packing for our move this weekend yet. Jake's 2-week final period is so intensive that it's impossible for him to focus on other tasks, so we decided it would be best to just wait and do everything today and tomorrow. I started a little by cleaning up the extra bedroom (aka nursery) and doing laundry, but we have a long way to go. Plus, my primary presidency decided not to find a replacement for me even though they got a 5-week notice that we were moving, so I told them I could be at church on Sunday to teach my class.

So, I will see all of the Mesanites on Monday. We'll throw a pool party or something next week, since I hear it hit 100 degrees in the valley this week.

Front Yard Updates

I just wanted to show some pictures of our new and improved blooming front yard.

Here is one of our 2 yellow lantanas. I was telling Jake the other day that if we lived in any other state besides Arizona, I wouldn't think this is beautiful, but here, anything with color is magnificent.

And here is what I like to call our willow tree. It's really one of our 2 mesquite trees. About a month ago, this was nothing but sticks and huge thorns. Now it's out of control. I absolutely love it, but I know we have to do something about it soon since it's taking over our side yard and our neighbor's yard too.

The Ultrasound

Well, you are probably all here for one reason. It’s because Jake and I
had our baby ultrasound today and you are all probably wondering how it
is doing. Well to let everyone know, the baby has 10 fingers & 10 toes
and appears to be very healthy all around. Our assistant’s name was Alla
and she spoke with a very thick German accent, but we enjoyed working
with her a lot. So I guess the big question on everyone’s mind now is if I
am having a boy or a girl. Well, let’s just say that you’ll have to look for
the answer in the text, because it’s hidden very carefully. Don’t tell
anyone what it is if you figure it out, but let me know if you do.

Cathy's Pants

I am too big for most of my pants. Too big for all of them if it wasn't for my friend Rubber Band. But I am too small for maternity wear. Plus I don't have any yet, which also makes it hard for me to wear. However, I do have one thing that has helped me through this awkward stage in my life: Cathy's pants.

(on the right)

I am blessed with a sister who is a size bigger than me. Now, this might not seem like a blessing to her, but it is. Cathy was fortunate enough to go through this thing people call "puberty" when she was a teenager. She grew in all the right places, and so she is an average girl now with these things called "hips". I on the other hand, skipped that phase. Or, I guess I should say I decided to enter it way late, leaving me with very little time to mature. I ended up with a flat butt. So I wear (wore) small sized pants. Cathy wears regular sized pants. And now I get to too, thanks to my weekend in Mesa last week and my ability to take some of her jeans back to Tucson before she realized it.

I guess I'll have to go shopping soon.

My Trip to Mesa

Last Wednesday, I took a mini-vacation to Mesa. This was for 2 reasons: First, Jake started finals last week, and had an 8-hour final on Friday that I didn't want to be a distraction for. And second, I'm quitting my job in 2 weeks and they don't pay out my accrued vacation time. I've worked for 6 months straight without taking a day off, I think I deserve something.

Anyway, I spent the end of last week reading books to Mabel, running around with Oliver, watching HGTV, looking for a summer job, and just relaxing.

On Thursday, I decided to go visit my old job in Phoenix. As I was driving down the freeway in Tempe, I noticed that Jake's brother was driving next to me, so I got to see him too. He was a little surprised to see me.

Here is a picture of Oliver Saturday morning after we accidentally let him stay up past his bedtime on Friday night.

p.s. Check back Tuesday to hear our baby gender news!
